PROGRAMME 2011/12

Saturday 4 February 2012

Viva Lloyd - CNUT SCRIPT

We will be studying the writing of Eadui Basan (Edward the Fat) who was a monk in Canterbury in the early 11th Century and worked for King Cnut. The hand is a variation of English Carolingian and makes our traditional Foundational far more interesting.

Saturday 24 March 2012

Sally Mangum - Copperplate

Here is a chance to try your hand at this increasingly popular script. Sally has worked as a copperplate calligrapher for many years and is coming to show us some of her techniques with the pointed pen. This workshop is suitable for beginners and also those with some experience.

Saturday 28 April 2012    THIS WORKSHOP WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE V&A MUSEUM

Cherrell Avery - Gold and Colour
This experimental workshop is a “golden” opportunity to be inspired by studying artefacts first hand and then to use contemporary gilding and paint and ink techniques to create unusual and striking backgrounds and layers to complement your calligraphy. We will begin by studying some Indian manuscripts and Renaissance panels before returning to the studio to learn about the materials and begin exploring different techniques. You will gain confidence using gold, metal leaf and colour and use your new skills to create a small finished piece.

Saturday 26 May 2012

Rosella Garavaglia - Broad edged brush lettering
In this workshop we will explore the versatility of the broad edged brush as a writing tool and experience the sense of freedom that this flexible tool inspires. We will develop a working brush-script that will allow for endless variations. The more experienced brush-writer will concentrate on experimenting with letter-shapes, variations of size, weight and colour. The workshop will give you an introduction to the skill of manipulating the flexible bristles to make marks, letters, words and lines of text.

Saturday 16 June 2012

Penny Price - Colour in Calligraphy
What colour shall I use and what will go with it? By doing some colour explorations with a few colours we can discover a whole new world waiting for us in our paint boxes! A practical workshop both understanding colour and then using it in a project.
